|
Robin. A fairy Jack the Lad, wiry and wired. Slightly wild but lovable. In awe of his brother and
enthralled by
Oberon and Titania. Enjoys taking the mickey out of the courtiers but rather
loves the Mechanicals.
Puck. Full-on mischievous woodland fairy. Likes to assert himself over his younger
brother.
Male or female, but the male pronoun is used in the script .
Theseus. King
of Athens and successful warrior. He has
been looking for a wife for a while and he is
head-over-heels in love with
Hippolyta, trying not to show that she scares the pants off him.
Hippolyta. Queen
of the Amazons. Tough, no-nonsense and not impressed with the softy nobles of
Theseus court.
One gets the feeling that
she is prepared to go along with the marriage, and have fun, until such time
as
she decides to do away with him and return to warfare.
Philostrate. Ironical Master of Revels. Fixed expression of a bulldog, chewing a
wasp.
Tolerates Theseus and thinks Hippolyta is a tramp.
Expected more of life
that this.
Oberon. Grace
and style. A small role but by far the most important person on stage.
Can make
suggestive remarks without losing his cool.
Titania. Beauty and calmness. Even better at suggestive remarks and much more important than Oberon.
Peter Quince (Carpenter) Earnest fuss-pot and long-suffering convenor of the amateur troupe. Makes ham acting an art form.
Nick Bottom (Weaver) Blissfully assumes that everyone else is as fond of the sound of his
voice as he is. Has probably never actually
seen a woman but when he realises
that Flute is one (see below) falls profoundly in love immediately.
Frances/Francis Flute (Bellows Mender) Pretending to be young a man to ensure a career in a man’s world. Maintains her pretence until
she finds
herself in a dress, as Thisbe, rather likes it and immediately falls totally in
love with Bottom (Pyramus).
Tom Snout (Tinker) Earnest actor. Doesn’t like Bottom.
Snug (Joiner) Appears talent-free and a little slow on the uptake, until he finds he can
impress people by being a lion.
Rather sweet.
Robin Starveling (Tailor) The world is so unfair, damn it.
Chorus. Acts 1 and 3. Courtiers with their noses in the air who also enjoy gossiping about senior nobles,
making snide whispers about Hippolyta, and having a good laugh at amateur actors.
Act 4. Woodland fairies; spookily calm in the magic of a midsummer night.
